How to Apply a Perfect Makeup Look
Firstly, make sure you start with a clean slate to have a perfect makeup look. That includes washing your face with a gentle cleanser and ending your skincare routine with moisturizer and sunscreen.
Step 1: Primer
Makeup primers enhance the longevity of your makeup while also blurring pores, mattifying oily skin and color-correcting uneven skin tone.
Step 2: Foundation
Ah, here’s where things get interesting. What comes first, foundation or concealer? Many have been stumped with this debate but here’s what you need to remember – do whatever you feel comfortable with.
Some may even skip foundation altogether as they do not need as much coverage. Or if you’re confident you won’t blend the concealer
(which is usually a shade lighter than your skin tone) outside of targeted areas, playing around with these steps will cause no harm.
We’re all for putting on foundation first as it basically gives an air-brushed look to the face, erasing spots, redness, small blemishes and pigmentation along the way.
Once that sets in, you’ll have a better picture of where the concealer goes.
Step 3: Concealer
Next up, the small but mighty concealer. Use light, medium or high coverage, depending on the occasion or how much you need to conceal.
We typically go for one or two shades lighter to mask dark circles, spots and other stubborn scars. You can either use a concealer brush, a damp beauty blender or your ring finger.
Get in on some dabbing action and you’re ready to go.
Step 4: Face powder
Keeping Singapore’s unforgivable weather in mind, it’ll be a pity to see your makeup melt away once you step out of the house.
A quick touch up would suffice but best you go in with a face powder to set your foundation and concealer, and end with a luminous finish.
We usually reach out for loose powders, but again, use what works for your skin type.
Do not, we repeat, do not underestimate this step. They say that eyebrows practically frame the face and we wholeheartedly agree.
Even if you’re gifted with naturally-shaped brows, filling them in makes all the difference.
There are numerous gel, powder and pomade choices. If you have more time on your hands, use a pomade (with an eyebrow brush) to sculpt the arch and keep stray hairs in place.
Step 6: Eyeliner
This is completely optional but if you can’t resist beautifying your eyes with some color and you aren’t too confident with eyeshadow, eyeliner takes charge.
You can keep it classic with a black eyeliner, but we’ve recently seen outstanding styles that play with lines and color. Tip: Smudge a gel eyeliner of any color to your lids to fake the application of eyeshadow.
Step 7: Mascara
This one’s also up to you. Once you’re satisfied with the eye makeup, finish off with one or two coats of mascara to make those peepers pop.
Don’t forget your lower lashes! Also remember to use a water-proof mascara to avoid panda eyes.
Step 8: Lips
Now for the lips. Gloss, tinted balm or cream; matte or satin finish; nude or classic red – there are so many options depending on the occasion.
We suggest playing around with these to secure your go-to choose. Tip: Line your lips for a more defined shape and precise application. We like using a brush for clean lines.
Step 9: Setting Spray
Finally, spritz on a setting spray to keep the makeup in place and shine at bay.
We like to use the ‘X’ and ‘T’ techniques over our faces so that the product covers all areas.
If you follow these steps, you get the look you want and it will look perfect.
